Lew Perin is one of New York City's veteran tea mavens.
He created the Chinese tea lexicon app http://babelcarp.org/babelcarp/ back in the 90’s
and is known for his tea knowledge and tasting. Having tried a couple of the Tea Studio teas he just wrote to me….thanks Lew!
Hey Kevin: Calling this tea a mao feng … is a stretch. It’s made from
big leaves, assamica I don’t doubt, and while there are very few
broken leaves, it’s not dainty like a Chinese mao feng.
BUT I LOVE IT!
This tea hits the bullseye of the Yunnan hong qing target, which is
one of my favorite places in the world. You know what that is, right?
Strong, grapefruity, puer-adjacent, dangerous if overbrewed but you
can brew the leaves ten times?
I imagine, judging by the tea’s name, this wasn’t what was expected,
but in my book it’s a keeper.
